I thought I'll start off the mailing list where people can talk about themselves
and why they are here.
My name is Dean Leggo and I'm a computer science student in Western Australia. I
have switched industries multiple times and I always cared for equality and the
environment. Now working in the tech industry I want computing to be an enjoy
for everyone and accessible. I'm drawn to Linux for its economic accessibility
and how people* can control their computing.
*currently only if they are technically minded.
Previously I worked on the NBN as a technician fixing peoples internet. I saw
many people, including the elderly who were worried about not understanding
their devices and not wanting to adventure away from what they know in case
they break it.
I only learnt I am colour blind when I was 18 and I don't see myself as
disabled* because I can fully function in society as our environment does not
limit what I can do. Also being a cis-white-guy from a 'middle class' family I
am not limited in what I can do. I see a lot of people who are limited and I
want to build a society and environment where everyone can have equal
opportunities and technology can help overcome some of these issues, but also
create more barriers that I want to dismantle.
*I hope this does not annoy anyone, I just wanted to use it as an illustration.
I love learning, learning where I am wrong, and how people experience life. I'm
back at uni for a second time to learn more technical skills and I hope I can
use these skills to listen to everyone here and improve fossability!

My name is Owl and I work at a public university in northern Sweden.
I was drawn to the public sector because accessibility is required there, and
because I couldn't motivate myself to work at for-profit companies any more.
I use Linux because it has allowed me to put together a system that works for
me and my accessibility needs, and I'm here because I want to help make that
possible for more people.
Other than a few small patches to rustc and other Rust projects, I don't have
much experience with Rust, but I hope that there will be something I can help
out with anyway! So far I've only contributed a light theme for the website. :)
