INTERNET SEARCH AFFECTS US ALL!
... that's why one of the goals of the Open Search Foundation is to
create more awareness of the problems and possible solutions. We are
particularly pleased that we were able to win over great keynote
speakers who will also provide impulses for the non-tech nerds among us
(see below for more information on the scientific programme).
A new addition to the #ossym2021 keynote speakers is Tim Smith from CERN
in Geneva. He will explain why science needs Open Search.

WHAT DOES ETHICS HAVE TO DO WITH INTERNET SEARCH?
What ethical price do we currently pay for being able to search the
internet quickly and conveniently? Why do we need a values-based
internet search? Which ethical values are important and how can we
anchor them in internet search? These questions are addressed not only
by the project #ethicsinsearch – Ethics of Internet Search [8] of the
Open Search Foundation, funded by Stiftung Mercator, but also by the
session "Ethics in Search" at #ossym2021.
On 13 October, we will start in the morning with the keynote by Carla
Hustedt (Head of the "Digitised Society" department at Stiftung
Mercator).
Afterwards, Pernille Tranberg, author and expert on data ethics, will
explain why we as individuals are also quite responsible for creating a
data democracy in which neither the state nor big tech control our lives
via data - and what we can do to achieve this.
Nelly Clausen and Dr Mirko Tobias Schäfer from Utrecht
University/Utrecht Data School present the Data Ethics Decision Aid
(DEDA) and show how ethical decisions can be anchored step by step in
data projects.
Christine Plote from the Open Search Foundation, co-leader of the
#ethicsinsearch project, will show why internet search needs ethical
guard rails before the discussion (moderated by Anton Frank, TU-Munich
and co-leader of #ethicsinsearch) begins.

BONUSTRACK
"THE SOCIAL DILEMMA" FREELY AVAILABLE UNTIL THE END OF THE MONTH
The award-winning documentary "The Social Dilemma" is freely available
on YouTube (yes, YouTube ... :-() until the end of the month.
The mix of documentary and fiction sheds light on the background, the
sophisticated mechanisms and psychological tricks that social media use
to keep us glued to our screens for as long as possible.
Many ex-managers of social media platforms and internet thought leaders
have their say, including Tristan Harris [9] (former ethicist at
Google), Shoshana Zuboff [10] (professor emerita at Harvard Business
School and author), Jaron Lanier [11] (contentious internet philosopher
and author) and Cathy O'Neil [12] (data scientist and author of "Weapons
of Math Destruction").
The film itself is not entirely free of the mechanisms it criticises.
Nevertheless, very much worth seeing!
