Just very quickly: I will be sending a patch soon to make the user option
of 'denote-modules' easy for users -- a list of symbols, rather  than the
compound type in the current patch.

Yes, this is better: we can handle all the implementation details
internally.

We may want to consider the default values so that we give users a good
