I have been trying out standard-themes again, with these significant
settings:

	standard-themes-mixed-fonts t
	rcirc-track-minor-mode t)

This means that my IRC message indicator is in the upper-right-hand
corner of the frame.  When I get a regular message, it appears just
fine, but when mentioned, the width of the indicator increases (due to
variable-pitch) and breaks the tab-bar line into two, which is visually
unappealing.

The simplest solution for this would be not to use bold text:
