This started as a follow up on https://lists.sr.ht/~rjarry/aerc-devel/patches/44342 and grew out of hand pretty quickly. Patch 3/3 also contains a revert of the aforementioned patch since colors/style now allow differentiating MIME types from filenames without any alignment. When adding new style objects it is impossible to give them a default color nor attributes without modifying each existing user styleset. Also, if the user has an incomplete styleset, some parts of aerc will have no style at all. These quirks are not nice from a user experience point of view. Before parsing the user styleset, initialize aerc style with basic defaults. Reuse the exact same content than the actual "default" styleset provided in /usr/share/aerc/stylesets. Comment all of the default styleset to make it obvious that these are default values. This has some implications: * To reset these defaults, the user styleset must now start with these two lines: *.default = true *.normal = true If these two lines are not present, the default style will be kept and only changed if the user styleset explicitly sets them. * Empty stylesets no longer produce weird results. It looks like I missed the discussion part, so here's my 2c. Although I like the new styling options, the patch needs some extra touches. Here's an example of what I used to have before for a particular parts-filled message: ========================================================================= multipart/alternative text/plain multipart/related text/html Untitled.jpeg (image/jpeg) Something.pdf (application/pdf) ========================================================================= Here's the same message in the new version: ========================================================================= (multipart/alternative) (text/plain) (multipart/related) (text/html) Untitled.jpeg (image/jpeg) Something.pdf (application/pdf) ========================================================================= The colors are missed, but some issues are still visible above. First of all, the part groups like "multipart/alternative" got parenthesis which they don't really need. Same for the parts without filenames like "text/plain". I believe the mime types of those parts could be easily considered as filenames for styling purposes. This means no parenthesis and filename styling. We have some of those before the patch was applied. I really miss that. As for the filename-styling, the problem rises up if we have mime types dimmed. See the "new version screenshot" above. Everything in the parenthesis is considered mime and if we have it dimmed, the whole parts selector gets dark and difficult to navigate. Considering mime-only parts as filenames should fix that. Next is the alignment thing. I really miss the right-aligned mime types. Having them dimmed is nice, but having them on the right is a killer feature. Please let them back. Maybe with a separate option? Another thing that could be dropped with the new styling is the parenthesis themselves. If we have mime types on the right and of a different color - we don't really need parenthesis there at all. Another option? Finally, the next thing that is asking to be added here is the file size field. This one could easily go straight after file names with its own styling, as well. There we could probably use parenthesis. Overall, this looks like a lot of changes, but most of them are really worth having around, so let's discuss what can be done here. I like how it is done for the message list columns formatting, maybe there is a way to use that without adding the table widget we discussed earlier?

Ok, but this will require some clarification in the docs so that users are not confused when they see mime types styled as filenames. > Next is the alignment thing. This really begs for a table so that you can style however you want with templates like the message list. I'll see if I can cook up something before releasing. Thanks for the feedback!
