Hi list,
Getting very tired of protonmail... What are folks using these days to
host their emails? Looking for something that allows me to use my own
domain name, as well as easy sync via mbsync. Also very happy if it
doesn't cost me the farm.
Best,
Kenneth

Hey Kenneth,
I am a huge Fastmail fan. They are investing in improving current standards,
both by chairing the IMAP WGs and getting JMAP as a standard. Servers are fast,
reliable, and I have multiple custom domains set up without having to pay extra
for each. Mobile app is the best one I've used.

Hi Kenneth,
I'm using Migadu and am a very happy customer. No problems, everything
is reliable, as many domains as I want, etc.
Another provider I've seen being used a lot around here is Fastmail.
Hope that helps.

I too am using Migadu, and have been for about five years. It works well
for me. I migrated there from ProtonMail.
Regards,
Adam
I'm using Posteo - they don't allow personal domain names, but otherwise
I'm happy with them. I migrated to them from ProtonMail. Though why is
everyone getting tired of Proton - is it just the need to use the
bridge? With hindsight, I thought they were pretty good. I didn't choose
Fastmail, because it's Australian - I'm from there, and the laws
allowing Internet surveillance by the police etc are less than ideal.

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions!

A few things that are starting to add up:
1. no possibility to forward emails automatically, so when I do make the
change to another provider I still have to keep the protonmail tab open
for years to come just in case...
2. with the latest update I keep getting a notification that my client
can't connect to bridge, even when I've turned off every single
mail-client-like app on my system. And the bridge seems to work just
fine...
3. Not possible to sort the mails when using imap.
4. Have to re-download all my emails every time something changes on
their server (f.x. adding an alias or such) or they update the bridge
when using maildir/mbsync.

As you can see, I'm also using posteo. Haven't really had any issues
with speeds despite also being from Australia. Not too expensive, but as
Tim mentioned, there are no custom domains (they do offer 3 aliases for
free though). The webmail (which I don't often use) has a dark mode and
is pretty lean.
I have previously used both cotse.net and proton (briefly). Based on my
experience, I wouldn't recommend cotse.net even though they do offer
custom domains, many aliases and spam filters, and are also fairly well
priced. Specifically, I experienced a lack of customer service,
unscheduled downtimes (more than a day) and an unattractive webmail (no
dark mode). Since I left, they have upgraded their website, so maybe
things have changed, but I'm not going back.
Didn't use proton for long, partly because of the bridge and partly
because they seem to use "privacy" as more of a marketing term. Their
transparency report [1] shows quite a large percentage of "legal orders
compied with" (compare to [2] for posteo) and their website has some
dark patterns (e.g. "create a free account" -> pricing plans). They also
seem on the pricey side.

I'm with mailbox.org. Another German company (like Posteo). They're really
great, and are also privacy centric. On the middle plan (€3 per month) you can
have up to 25 custom domain name emails, many more general *@mailbox.org
aliases, and also temporary emails that you can generate that expire within
3 months (unless you renew). In the form of
`<random-alphanum>@temp.mailbox.org`.
I maintain a little CLI tool for managing temporary email addresses:
https://github.com/tjex/mailbox-org-cli
You also get online storage and other office services (like private, encrypted
video chat). They have pgp built in and are in general quite interoperable and
have good documentation for setup / integrations. Their customer support is also
awesome.
I would probably go with fastmail if I had to change. But they're an Australian
company, and therefore part of the five eyes alliance, meaning that if any
Government within that group want to read through Fastmail servers, they could.
Not an immediate issue, but if it becomes an issue (Governments change), then
it's an issue...

Some still self-host... and planning to give https://stalw.art/ a try
soon-ish.

Have a look at Purelymail and their advanced pricing:

Thanks a lot for the tips, both of you! Very useful... (although I
suspect I
won't be doing self-hosting any time soon...)
Best,
Kenneth

I'm using mailbox too and have been very satisfied. There is one 'minor'
issue though: the `X-Mailer` header is stripped when sending via SMTP.
You could check this exact mail: `X-Mailer: aerc` is missing.
I think I read somewhere that some SourceHut mailinglists may have
troubles recognizing patches if the `X-Mailer: git-sendemail` header is
not there?

Nice tool, thanks!

hmmm, very true! X-mailer: aerc is indeed not there...
And this is worrying if it will create issues with sourcehut. I am starting to
like it more and more as my eyes adjust to non-javascript aesthetic.
Hope the tool serves you well!
