I realized that I want friends. I was up on the land by myself for a day and at one point I stopped and wondered if I would start talking to myself. It gave me pause, twice. I'm not anti-social, if anything I'm gregarious, but I've allowed myself to get to the point where I effectively have no friends. There are a few people who might take exception to that, if they heard me say it, but that is kinda the point: they would never hear me say it because we never communicate.

It's weird to look back in your fiftieth year and confront the fact that every relationship you've had (barring family) has failed. It's not exactly an achievement, you know? It's certainly not something I planned. It's even weirder to set out deliberately to make new friends. But you gotta do what you gotta do, eh? And I'm pretty weird anyway, so what's a little more?
The funny thing is that I find that I don't want to just hang out. I want to be friends with a purpose, if that makes sense? Like if I was raised religious I would go (back) to church. I don't want to join a religion or a cause or anything like that. I do want to get things done along with other people to tackle, e.g. ecological regeneration, post-AI economics, large flying buildings, etc...
So I joined Mastodon: https://mastodon.social/@carapace heh
There was a recent thread on HN where everybody listed their blogs, and someone made a blogroll with a "go to random" button, and I spent a day clicking it and following interesting people on Mastodon (if they were on it) or RSS feed (or both). Now to start contacting them...
If you're reading this (in 2023) it's likely because you're one of the cool and interesting people... Hello!
You wanna be friends?

Note to self: do not use an editor (GEdit, in this case) that doesn't wrap lines.
The sr.ht mailing list web UI doesn't wrap lines, so long lines make for long horizontal scrolling...............................................................................
