Hello,
I’m Ploum and I write mostly in French. I’ve opened my technical blog in
2004, wrote the very first book about Ubuntu in 2005 and I’m currently
publishing SF books (in French).
From 2004 to 2008, ploum.net was self-hosted with Dotclear then I
switched to Wordpress. Discovering Gemini in 2020, I launched a gemlog
on gemini://rawtext.club/~ploum (in English).
I’m now in the huge process of merging my blog (nearly 800 articles and
850k words) and my gemlog (±50 articles and 35kwords) into a minimalist
static blog/gemlog that would be hosted on sourcehut.
Challenges are huge. I’m in the process of converting my whole Wordpress
history into gemtext in order to have a huge gemlog then converted to
static html. The project is here :
https://sr.ht/~lioploum/ploum.net/
The test instance is seen through gemini/http://ploum.be
As I write in both English and French, the resulting site would have to
support both and allow readers to choose only one language.
I’m currently trying to find a replacement for mailpoet, the
mailing-list system linked to my wordpress blog. I have 1k+ subscribers
to migrate to two mailing-lists (FR and EN). I’m, of course, considering
sourcehut but I’m a bit afraid to lose many non-tech readers which may
be afraid of the strange subscribe email. There’s also the huge problem
that the instruction are in English and some of my French-speaking
readers are really afraid of that language. (my blog has a vocation to
educate about tech and I’m quite proud to have non-tech readers sending
me feedbacks). Last but not least, I still investigating how to send
blog posts by email so they would look good on gmail and phones
(text-only email at 72char per lines look awful on phones, as I’ve seen
with someone reading one of my email).
Any help is welcome, I’m glad to enter this sourcehut community
