If you use Facebook for organizing events, try Mobilizon[1].

This blog post resonates *so much* with me.
I had my share of issues [0] with Discord when I tried changing the email
associated to my account: their antispam bot went into a frenzy paranoid
mode and wanted my phone number (which is becoming a new trend among these
services). The user support was just as useless. I closed the account.
They don't care, they don't need users like us.
Since then I'm cut out of some FOSS communities I'd like to participate
(notably the Doom Emacs community).
Discord is objectively easy and convenient and some maintainers just
don't have bandwidth to roll their own solution. Pointing out that it's
not an inclusive choice, that it does not respect users' rights is just
*not enough* for busy maintainers.
The suggested alternatives are imo all lacking one way or another:
- Matrix: wacky integration with video/audio streaming (last time I
checked ~1 year ago)
- Zulip: best threading model (imo) but no integration *at all* with
video/audio streaming
- IRC: well ...
I will repost this article hoping that it helps pushing towards a
change. We are in 2021: the alternatives are improving and look
better than just one year ago.

It would be appropriate to mention *the Fediverse*,
the "federated universe" of ActivityPub server applications,
which includes many big and small projects
like Mastodon, Pleroma, PeerTube, Mobilizon, etc.

Worth mentioning also that by searching for "awesome fediverse", one can find
resources listing federated options to popular centralized services.
