Sourcehut is designed so that each service is independent. Thus, if you
were to set up your own instance, you could possibly install lists.sr.ht
without sr.ht (the project hub) and it would work fine without the other
services. This change would introduce unnecessary coupling into sourcehut.

Where or when was this reasoning provided?
Actually I think this is as a missing feature and a ticket was filed 4 years ago, tracked for the
beta:

It's possible to set up your bio in a way that works around this current
limitation. I posted[1] to this mailing list about my workaround before,
and you can check my bio[2] to see it in action.
Notice that this is not official srht guideline.
