When companies grow larger just for the sake of doing so you eventually end up including roles that do not need to exist. Then, extra unneeded features spill in as a means to justify those new roles. This is based solely on my own experiences. So YMMV.

Yeah I'm not sure why JS would be mandatory for such a "basic" site. Most requests could really just be made server side to make things feel even more snappy. I'm also pretty sure they are pulling in an older version of jQuery...for some reason.
