Hello all,
Dusk's text editor is good enough as it is for rudimentary text editing. It can
load files, save files, add/remove lines, add/remove characters, move around,
print lines. I've successfully deployed this version of Dusk on my old Pentium
75 Mhz w/ 16mb of RAM and could make a trivial change to my init.fs.
It works (and it's fast!), I can now work on Dusk from within Dusk. So without
further ado, I'm diving in!
I am very aware that I'm giving myself a lot of troubles by diving in with such
rudimentary tools, but from my Collapse OS experience, I know for sure that
bootstrapping a Forth from within itself is very exciting, much more so than
developing it from the outside.
Therefore, further commits coming from me will be developed from within Dusk. As
things are now, I am well aware that there are many danger zones and I'm at high
risk of regularly hosing my system. For this reason, my development priorities
now are:
1. Develop a way to send files through RS-232 (the floppy drive on that laptop
is broken, I deploy to it by taking the HDD out and writing to it through a
IDE/USB adapter. I don't want to do that for transferring work). That means
a XMODEM implementation.
2. Develop tools and safeguards to minimize the risk of me accidentally hosing
the system.
3. Develop tools and safeguards to minimize data loss risks.
4. Make the text editor more usable, add a Grid interface.
5. Begin working on "quality of life" tools for the shell.
This is gonna be fun!
