Have you tried XMPP? I used it many years ago, but left due to lack of
adoption. It seems to be picking up a bit more nowadays, and gateways like
slidge seem to work for Telegram and Signal. This opens the door for lots
of other clients.

I have tried XMPP sometime in 2020 but gave up very quickly as I was
pretty underwhelmed by the available clients. Admittedly, I wasn't very
passionate about trying it in the first place as I don't know anyone
using it (anymore), so it felt like a dead end from the beginning.
Generally I'm open to trying it again if there are people I can reach
there. For now, I've been trying to use Matrix a little bit but am
facing the same issue: no one I know is using it so next to no
conversations are happening there.

I wasn't aware gateways exist for XMPP. I'll look into those, thank you!
Recommendations for XMPP clients are welcome. :)

Lack of individuals using it is a big issue -- and for chat rooms IRC is
usually enough anyway.
About 10 years ago, Google Talk used to federate as XMPP, which was quite
promising (I knew a few people who used either GTalk or some XMPP server).
Google decided to kill federation one day, at which point the XMPP ecosystem
was fragmented in two, and a lot of the enthusiasm (and userbase) died quickly.

Dino has been working okay for me; it's a very simple GTK client, and has
worked fine so far.
Still haven't properly set up gateways, but looking into that to use Signal on
platforms other than the few they officially support.

I heard/read about this a lot and it's a shame that I wasn't interested
in any of that back then. Google using XMPP instead of some proprietary
protocol must have been quite nice as people not interested in any of
that still used XMPP, even if they did so unknowingly.

From what I can see by glancing at the project it seems quite nice.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to try it out!

Gateways sound amazing. It's the "all in one" chat client solution I'd
like to have. They're all the way up there on the list of things to try
soon. Thanks again for the hint.
I have thought about setting up Matrix with Bridges before but have been
procrastinating on doing so because Matrix just feels a bit bloated for
a chat client (although that feeling could stem from the Element client,
I'm not sure).
